How to Measure Square Footage
Square footage is simply length × width. For rectangular rooms, measure the longest wall and the adjacent wall in feet, then multiply. For non-rectangular spaces, break them into rectangles and add the areas together.

Tips for Accurate Measurement
- Measure to the walls, not the baseboard. Flooring runs under baseboard trim; measure wall-to-wall.
- Measure twice. Write it down. A 1-foot error on a 15-foot room creates an 8% miscalculation on your material order.
- Include closets in flooring calculations. Exclude them for paint (closets have separate walls).
- For irregular rooms, break the space into rectangles. Alcoves, bay windows, and bump-outs each get their own measurement.
