How to Calculate Flooring β€” The Right Way

The basic formula is area Γ· box coverage, rounded up. The part most DIYers skip is the waste factor β€” and they end up one box short with no matching lot available.

// Step 1: Total area (all rooms combined)
Area = Length Γ— Width per room, summed

// Step 2: Add waste factor
Order area = Total area Γ— (1 + waste %)

Boxes = ROUND_UP(Order area Γ· sq ft per box)

// Never round down β€” partial boxes don't exist

The Acclimation Rule β€” Don't Skip This Step

Almost every flooring type needs to acclimate to your home's temperature and humidity before installation. Stack the unopened boxes in the room for:

  • LVP / Luxury Vinyl β€” 24–48 hours minimum
  • Laminate β€” 48–72 hours
  • Engineered Hardwood β€” 48–72 hours
  • Solid Hardwood β€” 3–7 days minimum; 14 days recommended

Skipping acclimation is the #1 cause of gaps, buckling, and squeaking after installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many boxes of flooring do I need for a 12Γ—12 room?
A 12Γ—12 room is 144 sq ft. With 10% waste, you need to cover 158.4 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per box, that's 8 boxes (always round up). This calculator handles that automatically β€” just enter the dimensions and coverage from your product's packaging.
Where do I find "coverage per box" on the packaging?
It's printed on the box end or side label β€” look for "sq ft per carton" or "coverage." Typical values: LVP is 20–24 sq ft, laminate is 18–22 sq ft, hardwood is 18–20 sq ft. Always use your specific product's number, not a general estimate, because it varies significantly by plank size.
Can I return leftover flooring boxes?
Usually yes β€” most big-box stores accept returns on unopened boxes within 90 days. But keep at least one box as a repair reserve. If you need to replace one damaged plank in 3 years, matching a discontinued lot is very difficult. Store spare boxes flat in a cool, dry space.
Do I need underlayment under LVP or laminate?
Most LVP products now include pre-attached underlayment. If yours doesn't, buy 2mm–3mm foam underlayment. For laminate, underlayment is essential for cushioning and moisture protection. Never double-layer underlayment β€” too much flex causes locking joints to fail and the floor to feel spongy underfoot.
What's the best flooring for a basement?
LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) is the best choice for basements β€” it's 100% waterproof, handles minor moisture and temperature fluctuations, and is the easiest floating floor to install. Avoid laminate and solid hardwood in basements due to moisture sensitivity. Engineered hardwood can work if your basement is consistently dry and conditioned.
