2026 Cost Per Mile Benchmarks
ATBS benchmarks show owner-operators averaged $1.85-$2.40 per mile in total all-in operating costs in 2026. This includes fuel ($0.58-0.65), insurance ($0.18-0.28), truck payment ($0.20-0.40), maintenance ($0.15-0.25), and fixed costs ($0.20-0.35). New authority operators with newer equipment typically run $2.00-$2.40/mile in their first year.
Your cost per mile is your floor — every load paying less than your CPM is a guaranteed loss regardless of gross rate. Recalculate it quarterly or whenever a major cost changes: new insurance rate, truck paid off, diesel price shift of $0.30+.
If your CPM is significantly above $2.40, identify which line item is driving it. Insurance above $0.30/mile, maintenance above $0.30/mile, or fuel above $0.68/mile are the most common outliers worth addressing first.
