What Is Dimensional Weight and Why Does It Matter?

Carriers charge based on the higher of actual weight or dimensional weight. DIM weight = (L Γ— W Γ— H) Γ· DIM divisor. A lightweight but large package β€” like a pillow or foam item β€” will almost always bill at DIM weight, not actual weight. Many shippers don't realize this and get billing surprises.

// DIM weight formula
DIM weight = (L Γ— W Γ— H) Γ· DIM divisor
UPS/FedEx divisor = 139 (domestic)
USPS divisor = 166

Billable weight = MAX(actual weight, DIM weight)

How do I avoid DIM weight charges?
Use the smallest box that safely fits your product. Every inch of unnecessary space costs money. For e-commerce sellers, audit your box inventory β€” many sellers use 3–4 box sizes when they could get away with 1–2 well-chosen sizes. Poly mailers for soft goods cost a fraction of boxes and have no DIM weight issue. For heavy, dense products, DIM weight rarely applies β€” your actual weight will exceed DIM weight.
