🇨🇦 Canadian IFTA Fuel Purchase Scenario Calculator
Compare two fuel purchase scenarios side by side. Enter volumes, prices, and your own IFTA rates for each scenario to see the estimated fuel cost, estimated IFTA component, and total cost difference. Scenario planning only. No official IFTA rates built in. Not a filing tool.
Scenario planner vs. quarterly estimation tool — what's the difference?
The IFTA Quarterly Estimation Calculator estimates your net IFTA position across multiple jurisdictions for a full quarter.
This tool compares two specific fuel purchase scenarios side by side — e.g., "what if I fuel 500 litres in Ontario vs 500 litres in Michigan" — showing the estimated cost difference. What-if planning only, not a quarterly position estimate.
Confirm IFTA rates before you enter them. Use the current IFTA Tax Rate Matrix (IFTA, Inc.) to look up the correct fuel tax rate for each jurisdiction and quarter. Rates change every quarter. This tool uses only the rates you enter — no official rates are built in.

📊 Scenario Breakdown

Scenario A
Scenario B
Scenario planning estimate only — not tax advice, filing advice, or a compliance tool. IFTA tax rates change each quarter and vary by jurisdiction. This tool uses only the rates you enter — no official IFTA rates are built in. This is not a substitute for your IFTA quarterly return. Verify current rates with your provincial/territorial IFTA authority and consult your accountant for filing obligations.
IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) means that where you buy fuel affects more than just the pump price — it also affects your IFTA tax position for the quarter. A jurisdiction with a lower fuel tax rate may reduce the IFTA component of a purchase. A jurisdiction with a higher rate may increase it. This tool lets you compare two purchase scenarios to see the estimated total cost difference, based entirely on the volumes, prices, and rates you enter.
For each scenario: fuel cost is volume multiplied by price, and the estimated IFTA component is volume multiplied by your entered rate (in cents per unit, converted to dollars). Total scenario cost is the sum of both components. The comparison shows the dollar difference between the two scenarios. This is a planning estimate — actual IFTA position depends on your full quarterly consumption and purchase records across all jurisdictions.
Figure
Formula
Fuel cost (per scenario)
volume × price per unit
Estimated IFTA component
volume × IFTA rate (cents) ÷ 100
Total scenario cost
fuel cost + estimated IFTA component
Cost difference
Scenario A total − Scenario B total
The IFTA rate you enter should be the current fuel tax rate for that jurisdiction in cents per litre (or per gallon if using US gallons). Rates are published quarterly by IFTA, Inc. in the IFTA Tax Rate Matrix. This tool does not look up, store, or validate any rate — it uses whatever you provide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the IFTA Quarterly Estimation Calculator?
The IFTA Quarterly Estimation Calculator estimates your net IFTA position for a full quarter across multiple jurisdictions. This Fuel Purchase Scenario Calculator compares two specific fuel purchase scenarios side by side — showing the estimated cost difference including fuel price and IFTA component. It is a what-if planning tool for individual purchase decisions, not a quarterly return estimate.
What does 'estimated IFTA implication' mean in this tool?
The estimated IFTA implication is the user-entered IFTA rate multiplied by the volume you enter. This is a simplified planning estimate — actual IFTA liability is based on consumed vs purchased across your full quarter and all jurisdictions. This tool does not calculate official IFTA liability.
Where do I find current IFTA rates?
Use the IFTA Tax Rate Matrix published by IFTA, Inc. at https://www.iftach.org/taxmatrix4/Taxmatrix.php to look up fuel tax rates by jurisdiction and quarter. Rates change quarterly. This tool does not contain any built-in rates — you must enter the rate for each jurisdiction yourself.
Does this tool tell me where I should fuel?
No. This tool shows the estimated cost difference between two scenarios based on the volumes, prices, and rates you enter. It does not recommend where to fuel or which scenario is better for your business. Fuelling decisions involve many factors beyond this estimate, including route planning, pump accessibility, and your specific IFTA account position.
Is this a filing tool or tax advice?
No. This is a scenario planning estimate only. It does not produce a filing-ready IFTA return, calculate official IFTA tax owing or credits, account for jurisdiction-specific exemptions, or constitute tax advice. Verify current rates and file with your provincial or territorial IFTA authority.
