🇨🇦 Canadian Fuel Surcharge Calculator

Estimate the fuel surcharge on a trip in CAD before you quote or invoice. Enter your current and peg diesel price ($/L), distance in kilometres, fuel economy (L/100km), and pick a cents-per-km, percentage, or flat method — the math is all yours, with no government fuel prices or tax rates baked in.

How your fuel surcharge is calculated

A fuel surcharge offsets diesel above an agreed baseline — the peg. When diesel sits at or below the peg, the surcharge is zero; above it, the surcharge rises with the price. This calculator builds the surcharge from your own numbers, with the method you choose. There are no government fuel prices, fuel-tax rates, or carbon-levy figures hardcoded into the math.

Two optional fields let you layer in costs you track separately. An optional $/L fuel tax / carbon / levy adjustment is added to your current diesel price before any fuel math — so it raises the effective diesel used for both diesel-over-peg and actual fuel cost. An optional $/trip adjustment is added to the final surcharge for contract-specific extras. Both default to blank, leaving the core calculation exactly as it was.

Coverage tells you how much of the trip's diesel the surcharge actually pays for. A surcharge well under 100% coverage means the rest of the fuel bill is absorbed into the base linehaul rate — so either the peg, the rate per km, or the percentage needs revisiting at current diesel prices. Recheck whenever diesel moves by a few cents per litre or you change lanes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fuel surcharge in Canadian trucking?
A fuel surcharge (FSC) is an extra amount added to the base linehaul rate to offset the cost of diesel above an agreed baseline, called the peg. When diesel rises above the peg price per litre, the surcharge rises; at or below the peg it is zero. It is negotiated between carrier, broker, and shipper — there is no single government-mandated rate in Canada. This tool estimates the surcharge in CAD from the numbers you enter.
How is the fuel surcharge calculated in this tool?
First it finds diesel over peg = max(current diesel price − peg price, 0). With the cents-per-km method, surcharge per km = (diesel over peg ÷ your price step) × your rate per km, then × distance. With the percentage method, surcharge = base linehaul × your percentage. With the flat method, surcharge = your flat amount per trip. Actual fuel cost = distance × (L/100km ÷ 100) × diesel price, and coverage % = surcharge ÷ actual fuel cost. Every figure comes from your inputs — nothing is hardcoded.
Does this calculator use government fuel prices, fuel tax, or the carbon levy?
No. This tool uses only the assumptions you enter. It does not pull a live diesel index, and it does not calculate GST/HST, provincial fuel tax, the federal fuel charge (carbon levy), IFTA, or any compliance figure. Use your own current diesel price and your contracted peg. For tax or compliance questions, speak with your carrier, broker, customer contract, or a qualified advisor.
Which fuel surcharge method should I use?
Use the method your contract or customer uses. Cents-per-km tracks diesel most directly and is common on long-haul lanes. Percentage of linehaul is simple and ties the surcharge to the rate. Flat per trip is used for fixed, repeating lanes. All three are estimates for planning — confirm the agreed method and peg with the other party before invoicing.
