How a dispatcher fee is calculated
A freight dispatcher finds and books loads for you and handles the paperwork — and charges for it. In Canada most dispatchers charge a percentage of each load's gross revenue (commonly somewhere in the mid-single digits to about 10%, but use your own), while some charge a flat fee per load or add other charges. If the dispatcher is registered and charges sales tax, GST/HST may apply on top of the fee. This calculator takes the figures from your own agreement and shows the dollar cost and the revenue you keep.
Some dispatchers apply the percentage only to the linehaul and exclude the fuel surcharge from the fee base. If that is your arrangement, enter the fuel surcharge amount to exclude it, and the percentage fee is calculated on the rest. Add a number of loads to project the cost and your net across a week or a month.
| Figure | Formula |
|---|---|
| Fee base | gross load revenue − fuel surcharge excluded |
| Percentage fee | fee base × dispatch fee rate % |
| Dispatch fee (before tax) | percentage fee + flat fee + other charges |
| GST/HST on fee | dispatch fee (before tax) × GST/HST % |
| Total dispatch cost | dispatch fee (before tax) + GST/HST on fee |
| Net revenue after dispatch | gross load revenue − total dispatch cost |
| Effective fee | total dispatch cost ÷ gross load revenue × 100 |
| Period dispatch cost | total dispatch cost × number of loads |
| Period net revenue | net revenue after dispatch × number of loads |
Run the numbers with and without the flat fee, other charges, and GST/HST to see the true all-in cost. A low headline percentage with several add-ons can cost more than a slightly higher percentage with none, and the effective fee shows the real share of each load that goes to dispatch.
