Rhode Island diesel tax rate is 34.0¢ per gallon for 2026. Calculate your IFTA fuel tax for Rhode Island routes and compare neighboring state rates.
Rhode Island at 34.0¢/gal is the smallest state geographically — most drivers transit through without stopping. Its position on I-95 between Massachusetts and Connecticut means it sees enormous freight traffic but generates relatively little long-haul freight itself. Providence is the state's primary freight market, driven by healthcare (Brown University Medical Center complex), education, and retail distribution.
I-95 (Providence–Attleboro MA / Connecticut, Northeast Corridor), I-195 (Providence–Fall River MA, southeast connector), I-295 (Providence bypass), US-1 (Providence–Warwick, coastal secondary)
Massachusetts at 24.0¢ is 10¢ cheaper and is the obvious fueling choice before entering Rhode Island from the north. Connecticut at 49.2¢ to the south is much more expensive. Most I-95 Northeast Corridor drivers fuel in Massachusetts or Rhode Island to avoid Connecticut's extreme rate. Rhode Island is short enough — about 48 miles on I-95 — that most drivers can transit without needing to fuel.
