New Jersey diesel tax rate is 56.1¢ per gallon for 2026. Calculate your IFTA fuel tax for New Jersey routes and compare neighboring state rates.
New Jersey's effective diesel rate of 56.1¢/gal (including petroleum products surcharge) makes it one of the more expensive fueling states on the East Coast. However, it's still cheaper than Pennsylvania (74.1¢) and Connecticut (49.2¢) and Washington (49.4¢), meaning NJ is often the least-bad option on the Northeast Corridor. The Port of New York/New Jersey is the largest port on the East Coast and third-largest in the US.
I-95 (Delaware–Newark–George Washington Bridge, Northeast Corridor), I-78 (Newark–Allentown PA), I-80 (George Washington Bridge–Delaware Water Gap–Pennsylvania), I-287 (NJ Turnpike connector), NJ Turnpike (I-95 toll road)
Delaware at 22.0¢ is 20.1¢ cheaper — the best practical alternative for southbound I-95 drivers. Pennsylvania at 74.1¢ means drivers heading west on I-78 or I-80 should absolutely fill up in NJ first. The NJ Turnpike requires E-ZPass or cash payment separate from IFTA. Exit 13A (Elizabeth/Newark port area) is one of the highest truck-volume interchanges in the US.
