Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Driver Per Diem Calculator free to use?
Yes — completely free with no account required. All QuicklyFig calculators are funded by display advertising so you never pay to use them.
What is the truck driver per diem rate for 2026?
The IRS special per diem rate for transportation workers is $80 per day for travel within the continental U.S. (CONUS). Partial travel days — the day you leave and the day you return — are claimed at 75% of the full rate. Drivers subject to DOT hours-of-service rules deduct 80% of the total, versus the standard 50% meal limit.
Can company drivers claim per diem, or only owner-operators?
For tax years 2018–2025, W-2 company drivers generally cannot deduct unreimbursed per diem on their federal return because miscellaneous itemized deductions are suspended. Owner-operators and other self-employed drivers deduct per diem on Schedule C at the 80% DOT rate. Some carriers also offer a non-taxable per diem pay program — ask your settlement department.
