Frequently Asked Questions

How are an owner-operator's true earnings calculated?
Start from the gross for the load or period, then subtract every direct cost: fuel, truck payment, insurance, maintenance, the dispatch fee, and any other costs. What is left is the net. The after-tax figure then applies your tax set-aside percentage to the net, so you can see roughly what remains once money is reserved for taxes.
What does the tax set-aside do?
The tax set-aside is the percentage of the net you choose to reserve for taxes. The tool multiplies the net by one minus that percentage to estimate what is left after setting tax money aside. It is a planning aid only — your actual tax depends on your deductions, entity type, and filing situation, so treat the after-tax figure as a rough reserve estimate rather than a tax calculation.
Is net per mile a recommendation about which loads to run?
No. Net per mile is simply the net divided by the miles, so loads of different lengths can be compared on the same footing. It is not advice on what to charge or which loads to accept — those depend on lane mix, equipment, and your own cost structure. The figures here are estimates for your own planning only.
