How your cost per kilometre is calculated
Your cost per kilometre is the floor under every rate you negotiate. Any load paying less than your cost per km is a guaranteed loss, no matter how good the gross looks. This calculator builds it from your own numbers — there are no government rates or industry averages hardcoded into the math.
An optional $/L fuel tax / carbon / levy adjustment can be added to your diesel price before the fuel-per-km math, so it flows straight into your effective diesel and fuel cost per km. It defaults to blank, leaving the core calculation exactly as it was — use it only if you track those costs separately from your pump price.
| Figure | Formula |
|---|---|
| Fixed cost per km | total fixed monthly costs ÷ monthly km |
| Effective diesel price | diesel price + optional fuel tax / carbon / levy adjustment ($/L) |
| Fuel cost per km | (L/100km ÷ 100) × effective diesel price |
| Total cost per km | fixed + fuel + maintenance/tires + other variable |
| Minimum rate per km | total cost per km + target profit per km |
| Per-mile equivalent | cost per km × 1.60934 (unit conversion only) |
Recalculate whenever a major cost changes — a new insurance premium, a paid-off truck, or a swing in diesel of a few cents per litre can move your cost per km enough to change which loads are worth taking. Fuel and maintenance per-kilometre costs scale directly with the distance you run; fixed costs are spread thinner the more kilometres you drive.
