How your cost per kilometre is calculated

Your cost per kilometre is the floor under every rate you negotiate. Any load paying less than your cost per km is a guaranteed loss, no matter how good the gross looks. This calculator builds it from your own numbers — there are no government rates or industry averages hardcoded into the math.

An optional $/L fuel tax / carbon / levy adjustment can be added to your diesel price before the fuel-per-km math, so it flows straight into your effective diesel and fuel cost per km. It defaults to blank, leaving the core calculation exactly as it was — use it only if you track those costs separately from your pump price.

Recalculate whenever a major cost changes — a new insurance premium, a paid-off truck, or a swing in diesel of a few cents per litre can move your cost per km enough to change which loads are worth taking. Fuel and maintenance per-kilometre costs scale directly with the distance you run; fixed costs are spread thinner the more kilometres you drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cost per kilometre for a Canadian owner-operator?
Your cost per kilometre (CPK) is every dollar it costs to operate your truck divided by the kilometres you drive. It combines fixed monthly costs (truck or lease payment, insurance, permits and licensing, ELD and software, health and benefits, other fixed) with variable per-kilometre costs (fuel, maintenance and tires, and other variable). Knowing your CPK in CAD tells you the minimum rate you can accept before a load loses money.
How is cost per km calculated in this tool?
Fixed cost per km = total fixed monthly costs ÷ monthly kilometres. Fuel cost per km = (litres per 100 km ÷ 100) × diesel price per litre. Total cost per km = fixed + fuel + maintenance/tires + other variable. Minimum rate per km = total cost per km + your target profit per km. Every figure comes from the numbers you enter — nothing is hardcoded.
Does this calculator use CRA rates or calculate my taxes?
No. This tool uses only your own entered assumptions and does not apply CRA automobile allowance rates, tax deductions, GST/HST, fuel tax, or provincial compliance figures. If you need the CRA tax-free per-kilometre allowance, use the CRA Mileage Calculator instead. This page is for operating-cost planning only.
Can I convert my cost per km to cost per mile?
Yes. Multiply your cost per kilometre by 1.60934 to get the equivalent cost per mile, because one mile equals 1.60934 kilometres. The tool shows this per-mile equivalent automatically so you can compare against U.S. per-mile rates. It is a unit conversion only.
