🇨🇦 Canadian IFTA Quarterly Estimation Calculator

Estimate a possible IFTA quarterly position across jurisdictions. Enter your fleet fuel economy, then add one row per jurisdiction with kilometres driven, taxable litres purchased, and your entered fuel tax rate. This tool estimates litres consumed, compares them to litres purchased, and shows an estimated credit or tax owing per jurisdiction — and a net position. Planning estimate only. This tool uses the rates you enter.

Confirm fuel tax rates before you enter them: Use the current IFTA Tax Rate Matrix (IFTA, Inc.) to look up the correct fuel tax rate for each jurisdiction and quarter. Rates vary by jurisdiction and quarter. This tool uses only the rates you enter — no rates are built in.

This tool is for planning only. It uses the kilometres, litres, jurisdictions, and fuel tax rates you enter to estimate a possible IFTA position. It does not provide tax advice, filing advice, compliance advice, or legal advice. It does not determine official IFTA liability, refunds, penalties, interest, audit risk, filing accuracy, or compliance status. Estimate your IFTA quarterly position from your own numbers

IFTA — the International Fuel Tax Agreement — requires carriers operating across participating jurisdictions to file a quarterly fuel tax return that reconciles where fuel was consumed against where it was purchased. Jurisdictions where you consumed more fuel than you bought typically result in a tax owing; jurisdictions where you bought more than you consumed typically result in a credit. The net across all jurisdictions is your IFTA position for the quarter.

This calculator lets you work through that reconciliation as a planning estimate before you file. Enter your fleet fuel economy, then add one row per jurisdiction with the kilometres you drove there, the taxable litres purchased there, and the fuel tax rate for that jurisdiction and quarter. It estimates litres consumed in each jurisdiction from your fuel economy and kilometres, computes the net taxable litres, and applies your entered rate to show an estimated credit or tax owing per jurisdiction — and a net IFTA position across all entered rows.

It is a planning estimate only. It uses only the rates and figures you enter. Use the current IFTA Tax Rate Matrix (IFTA, Inc.) to confirm the correct fuel tax rate for each jurisdiction and quarter before entering it here. IFTA returns involve jurisdiction-specific rules, exemptions, and account records that this tool does not account for — confirm your actual filing with your IFTA account, accountant, or qualified advisor.

How each figure is calculated

FigureFormula
Est. litres consumed (per jurisdiction)km in jurisdiction × fleet fuel economy (L/100km) ÷ 100
Net taxable litres (per jurisdiction)taxable litres purchased − est. litres consumed
Est. credit / (owed) per jurisdictionnet taxable litres × fuel tax rate (¢/L) ÷ 100
Positive result per jurisdictionpossible credit (purchased more than consumed there)
Negative result per jurisdictionpossible tax owing (consumed more than purchased there)
Estimated net IFTA positionsum of all jurisdiction credits and tax owings

Every figure in the output comes from your inputs. No IFTA fuel tax rates are built into this tool — you must enter the rate for each jurisdiction from the current IFTA Tax Rate Matrix. Results are estimates for planning only and should not be used as a filed IFTA return or an official determination of tax liability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this IFTA quarterly estimation calculator do?
It estimates a possible IFTA quarterly position from the kilometres, taxable litres purchased, and fuel tax rates you enter for each jurisdiction. For each row it computes estimated litres consumed (from your fleet fuel economy and kilometres), compares them to taxable litres purchased, and multiplies the difference by your entered rate to show an estimated credit or tax owing per jurisdiction, plus a net IFTA position across all entered rows. It is a planning estimate only — not a filing tool, not tax advice, and not a determination of official IFTA liability.
How are litres consumed per jurisdiction calculated?
Estimated litres consumed in a jurisdiction = kilometres in that jurisdiction multiplied by your fleet fuel economy (L/100km) divided by 100. For example, 1,000 km at 35 L/100km = 350 litres consumed. This is an estimate based on the fuel economy you enter — actual consumption varies by load, terrain, and conditions.
Where do I get the fuel tax rate for each jurisdiction?
Use the current IFTA Tax Rate Matrix published by IFTA, Inc. to confirm the correct rate for each jurisdiction and quarter before entering it here. Rates change quarterly. This tool does not include any built-in rates — all rates must come from you.
Does this calculate my actual IFTA filing amount?
No. This tool produces a planning estimate only. It does not determine official IFTA liability, filing amounts, refunds, penalties, interest, audit risk, compliance status, or whether you are compliant or non-compliant. IFTA returns involve jurisdiction-specific rules, exemptions, and account records that this tool does not account for. Confirm your return with your IFTA account, accountant, tax professional, or qualified advisor.
Can I use this for US jurisdictions too?
The calculator accepts any jurisdiction label and any rate you enter. If you operate in US states, you may add them as rows with the correct rate from the IFTA Tax Rate Matrix. Note that US rates are typically expressed in cents per gallon — convert to cents per litre before entering (1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 litres). Confirm the correct unit and rate with the IFTA Tax Rate Matrix or a qualified advisor.
