Your fleet fuel economy is used to estimate litres consumed per jurisdiction from the kilometres you enter. The quarter label is for your reference only and does not affect the estimate.
One row per jurisdiction where you operated this quarter. Use the IFTA Tax Rate Matrix to confirm the rate for the correct quarter and jurisdiction before entering it here.
| Jurisdiction | KM Travelled | Taxable Litres Purchased | Rate (¢/L) | Est. Litres Consumed | Net Taxable Litres | Est. Credit / (Owed) |
|---|
Est. litres consumed = km × fuel economy ÷ 100 · Net taxable litres = purchased − consumed · Est. credit/(owed) = net litres × rate ÷ 100 · Green = possible credit · Red = possible tax owing

Estimate your IFTA quarterly position from your own numbers
IFTA — the International Fuel Tax Agreement — requires carriers operating across participating jurisdictions to file a quarterly fuel tax return that reconciles where fuel was consumed against where it was purchased. Jurisdictions where you consumed more fuel than you bought typically result in a tax owing; jurisdictions where you bought more than you consumed typically result in a credit. The net across all jurisdictions is your IFTA position for the quarter.
This calculator lets you work through that reconciliation as a planning estimate before you file. Enter your fleet fuel economy, then add one row per jurisdiction with the kilometres you drove there, the taxable litres purchased there, and the fuel tax rate for that jurisdiction and quarter. It estimates litres consumed in each jurisdiction from your fuel economy and kilometres, computes the net taxable litres, and applies your entered rate to show an estimated credit or tax owing per jurisdiction — and a net IFTA position across all entered rows.
It is a planning estimate only. It uses only the rates and figures you enter. Use the current IFTA Tax Rate Matrix (IFTA, Inc.) to confirm the correct fuel tax rate for each jurisdiction and quarter before entering it here. IFTA returns involve jurisdiction-specific rules, exemptions, and account records that this tool does not account for — confirm your actual filing with your IFTA account, accountant, or qualified advisor.
How each figure is calculated
| Figure | Formula |
|---|---|
| Est. litres consumed (per jurisdiction) | km in jurisdiction × fleet fuel economy (L/100km) ÷ 100 |
| Net taxable litres (per jurisdiction) | taxable litres purchased − est. litres consumed |
| Est. credit / (owed) per jurisdiction | net taxable litres × fuel tax rate (¢/L) ÷ 100 |
| Positive result per jurisdiction | possible credit (purchased more than consumed there) |
| Negative result per jurisdiction | possible tax owing (consumed more than purchased there) |
| Estimated net IFTA position | sum of all jurisdiction credits and tax owings |
Every figure in the output comes from your inputs. No IFTA fuel tax rates are built into this tool — you must enter the rate for each jurisdiction from the current IFTA Tax Rate Matrix. Results are estimates for planning only and should not be used as a filed IFTA return or an official determination of tax liability.
